Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is a significant holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It represents a celebration of freedom, equality, and the ongoing fight for social justice. To honor this important occasion, we propose hosting a Juneteenth Poetry Slam, an event that combines artistic expression, community engagement, and the celebration of African American culture.
In 2021, Juneteenth became a U.S. federal holiday officially known as, Juneteenth National Independence Day or Emancipation Day. Juneteenth is celebrated locally and nationally all month long with festivals, talks, performances, and parades. KPA is proud to celebrate Juneteenth with the Lipstick Wars Poetry Slam-Juneteenth Edition on Saturday, June 8th at 5pm-8pm, in the Bomhard Theatre.
